Ingredients

  1. fat from meat - watch the video to see (collect enough to render)
  2. water - 1/2 cup (to prevent burning)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Fat: Cut the fat up into small pieces.
  2. Start the Rendering Process: Take a pot, add the cut-up fat and about half a cup of water. The water will prevent the fat from burning before it renders.
  3. Rendering the Fat: You have two options: do it on a burner on low heat, which is a bit smelly and takes a while, or in the oven. For the oven method, preheat the oven to 110°C and let it render for 3 hours.
  4. Final Steps: After 3 hours, strain the liquid to remove any pieces of meat and gristle. The remaining liquid is your tallow.
