Prepare Rice: Soak rice in cold water for 30 minutes, then rinse until water runs clear and drain.
Cook Spices: Heat butter or oil in a pan, fry onion with salt until soft. Add whole spices and bay leaf, cook for 2 minutes. Add ground coriander and turmeric, cook for 1 minute.
