Ingredients

  1. flour - 2 cups
  2. mahlab or cake spices - 1/2 teaspoon (for traditional Eid flavor)
  3. butter - 100 grams (melted or softened)
  4. rose water - 3 tablespoons
  5. milk - 1/2 cup
  6. walnuts - 1 cup (can substitute with pistachios)
  7. sugar - 2 tablespoons (granulated)
  8. vegetable oil - as needed (for frying)
  9. powdered sugar - as needed (for coating)
  10. pistachios - as needed (for garnish, optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough: Mix flour and mahlab or cake spices in a bowl. Add butter and mix until the mixture resembles sandy dough. Gradually add rose water and milk, kneading until a firm dough forms. If necessary, add more milk to reach the desired consistency.
  2. Prepare the Filling: Crush walnuts with a rolling pin or grinder. Mix with sugar and rose water until well combined.
  3. Shape and Fill: Take portions of dough, flatten with your hand, and place a portion of the filling in the center. Fold and shape as desired.
  4. Fry: Heat vegetable oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Fry the shaped dough until light golden brown. Remove and let cool to room temperature.
  5. Coat with Sugar: Roll the fried pieces in powdered sugar until fully coated. Garnish with pistachios if desired.
  6. Serve: Serve the dessert on a plate. Enjoy the flavors reminiscent of traditional Eid Maamoul.
