Instructions

  1. Prepare Cakeboard and Cake Layers: Cut the cakeboard to match the proportions of the reference bus. Stack chocolate cake layers with blue colored Swiss meringue buttercream until tall enough for front and side templates.
  2. Carve and Coat Cake: Chill the stacked cake until firm. Carve the cake roughly to match the templates. Coat the carved cake with buttercream, smooth out imperfections, and chill again.
  3. Cover Wheel Wells and Cake: Cover the inside of the wheel wells with black fondant. Cover the entire cake with light pink fondant.
  4. Create Cake Platform: Press Rice Krispie treats in a loaf tin to form the platform base. Cut to template size. Coat with a thin layer of royal icing and let dry.
  5. Assemble Platform and Cakeboard: Glue the platform onto the cakeboard with royal icing and let dry. Coat platform and cakeboard with shortening, then cover with blue fondant.
  6. Place Cake on Platform: Spread royal icing on top of the platform and place the cake on top.
  7. Make Decorations: Create side mirrors and wheels from fondant and let dry until firm. Use templates to cut out decorative fondant elements and glue them onto the cake with water using a paintbrush.
  8. Create Side Design: Pipe blue and yellow buttercream onto acetate, layer thin cake pieces, freeze, cut to template shape, and press into the side of the cake. Pipe black royal icing lines around the design and let dry.
  9. Make Smoke Effect: Use floral wire to create a structure and press cotton candy onto it to form a cloud shape. Attach this to the back of the cake to simulate smoke.
